When NOT to ask AI

Asking AI for advice on setting up a VPS can be a very bad idea.

Imagine going for flying lessons where the instructor refuses to give any guidance or advice, but only responds to questions you ask.  You might be able to drag out of them the sequence of actions you need to perform to get the plane off the ground, but, once in the air, how are you going to know all the things you have to do, like maintain hoizontal attitude, keep an eye on your airspeed indicator, check your fuel guage, read the weather radar and so on, unless the instructor is going to volunteer advice on their own initiative rather than only be prompted by your questions?

Artifical Intelligence can be incredibly useful to experts who already know what they are doing and need to fill in on a gap in their knowledge. Their expertise facilitates them asking the right questions and also being able to critically examine AI's response .  But in the hands of a beginner, AI can be positively dangerous, either giving flawed advice or simply not giving the advice you need to know because you don't yet know enough to ask it the right questions.

A case in point is setting up a mail server on a VPS. There are umpteen ways bad actors can invade your fledgling mail server and hijack it for relaying spam or worse. A mail server needs many different protective measures taken  preemptively and in the right order. This kind of information requires a comprehensive instruction manual based on human experience.

I have written two manuals, which describe in step-by-step detail how to install a secure web server and secure mail server on Linux. The manuals can be purchased at my author website: Unusual Mysteries - Cookbook  They are not expensive and will repay your investment of a small amount of cash in both time and trouble saved.
