Day to Day Running
Previous Topic  Next Topic

Version Saver is actually three programs in one, two of which run as hidden programs which you don't see.

Windows Start-Up

Whenever you start up Windows, Version Saver starts running a hidden program, called "VSService".  This is the Version Saver program that does all the work of watching for file changes and saving a new version of each file change.

So, for day to day running of Version Saver you don't have to do anything. The program will automatically be running. albeit invisibly, each time you run Windows.

Green Button Indicator

You will know that Version Saver is working by the little green button icon it places in your system tray. This will flash green to yellow every time it is examining your disk drives for changed files that need backing up. So if, for example, you have set the backup interval to be every 5 minutes, then you will see the green button icon flash at 5 minute intervals for about 20 seconds or so.

The first time Version Saver is run, or when it is doing a "full" backup, the green icon may continually flash for many minutes. Don't be concerned about this. It just means that lot of files are needing to be backed up at that time. Eventuallt the button icon will stop flashing.

Displaying Version Saver

You will only need to run Version Saver yourself for two purposes:

a) To change the configuration

b) When you want to search for and restore an older version of a file

You can display Version Saver from the Programs Menu, or if you right-click the mouse on the green button indicator in the system tray, it will pop up a menu for displaying Version Saver.

VERY IMPORTANT ADVICE FOR SUCCESSFUL DAY-TO-DAY OPERATION

Version Saver only makes backups of changed files.  If you work on a file, say a word processor document, for two hours without saving it, don't expect Version Saver to have kept lots of copies of your work in progress. It won't have kept any!  On the other hand, if during that two hours you saved your file every 5 minutes, then Version Saver will have detected each save and could have kept up to 24 different versions of the file in progress. The motto is save your work to disc frequently. This would be good advice even if you hadn't installed Version Saver!!
